Fire Safety

This term in my class I am teaching my kids about Fire Safety. The Hamilton Fire Service sent down a great resource to help assist teaching. Follow this link to their website.

So far we have been looking at what a fire is and the different types of fire we have around home. My students had a variety of images and they had to sort them into categories - fire they have at home and fire they don't.

We then learnt about fire alarms and what to do when a fire alarm goes off. The book is great and explains the key teaching points. We practiced what we would do if the fire alarm went off at school. I made sure that my students knew there is more than one way to exit our class if there is a fire. I explained that it is important to have a safe meeting point at home so students were going to work with parents to decide where that would be.

We also had a fire drill today as a school which fitted in great - however in the heat of the situation my students didn't listen to half of the instructions given!! Next time should go much better.

One lesson was looking at the importance of getting down low and getting out quick. We practiced this and then made our little people get down, get low and get out. Below is a great wee song that I used to help my kids remember.

To end the unit, Hamilton fire department sent down a firefighter. It was such a great way to end the unit and it was good for the kids to ask questions of a real fire fighter.

After the visit we decided that we needed to send a thank you card to Kevin. This was a great literacy link and children were able to share their learning.
